David Gordon Green’s upcoming remake of the stone-cold classic The Exorcist (1973) has had its US release date shifted forward a week, to avoid competition with Taylor Swift’s live concert film, Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour.
Blumhouse’s remake – titled The Exorcist: Believer was slated to hit American theatres on the spooky, Halloween-adjacent date of October 13 2023, but has now shifted to a week earlier, October 6. (Hey, it’s still got the 666 reference…right?!)
Jason Blum took to X (still Twitter to some, I guess), saying:
“Look what you made me do. The Exorcist: Believer moves to 10/6/23 #TaylorWins.”
Fans and online media outlets were quick to jump on the news, with some expressing keenness for the next "Barbenheimer’' – or, in this case, “The Exorswift”.
The Exorswift: 2023's next big cultural phenomenon?
Apparently, Taylor’s popularity is mostly an American phenomenon, however, with cinemas outside the US (including the UK) sticking with the O.G. release date of the 13th. Something for the rest of us to look forward to, then – albeit a week later than our American horror-loving counterparts.
The Exorcist: Believer stars Leslie Odom Jr, Olivia Marcum, Lidya Jewett, and Ann Dowd (the creepy old cult member from Hereditary (2017)). Who knows whether it will make the same kind of splash as Gordon Green’s Halloween (2018) film (if not its two sequels) did – or whether it’ll come even close to building on the legacy of the original Exorcist. (Whose director, William Friedkin, sadly passed away earlier this year.)
TL, DR? The Exorcist: Believer's release date is now October 6, 2023 in the US.
Time will tell! Personally, I can’t wait to catch this one in cinemas in a month’s time – so look out for my review, right here on Talking Terror, then!
